Ask what the citation is doing

Technical documents may place several standards in the same footnote. That does not make them alternative names for one procedure. Identify whether each reference supplies a measurement method, calculation framework, reference data, or a separate certification record.

The descriptions below are short pointers to publishers’ public scope pages. They are not the full standards, instructions for running a test, or an interpretation of conformity.

Optical measurement & solar weighting

ASTM E903-20

ASTM’s E903 scope concerns spectral absorptance, reflectance and transmittance measured with an integrating-sphere spectrophotometer, with solar-weighted properties calculated from the measurements.

Reading question
Which result is attributed to this method, and what spectrum or weighting basis is reported?

Colorimetric computation

ASTM E308-22

ASTM’s E308 scope concerns computing CIE colorimetric quantities from spectral data. Its framework includes the observer and illuminant.

Reading question
Which quantity was computed, and which stated conditions belong to it?

Historical reference spectrum

ASTM E891-87(1992)

This historical ASTM listing describes direct-normal solar spectral irradiance data for air mass 1.5. ASTM marks the document withdrawn in 1999.

Reading question
Is the old sheet naming a reference spectrum? Retain its citation and context; do not silently substitute a newer document.

Building-glazing characteristics

ISO 9050:2026

ISO’s current publisher listing covers determination of luminous and solar characteristics of building glazing. The third edition was published in July 2026; ISO lists its 2003 predecessor as withdrawn.

Reading question
Which edition does the evidence actually name? Do not relabel an older result as a test to a later edition.

Record two dates, not one

Keep the document’s own revision or edition date separate from the date you checked its status. The publisher may update a listing after a technical sheet was issued. Your check date records your review; it does not change the method used in the original work.

A historical citation is a reason to investigate the basis, not an automatic verdict that the old result is invalid. Conversely, a current identifier does not establish that a particular product completed the work it cites. Seek the relevant report or issuer clarification.

Keep certification evidence in its own field

The NFRC film-program fact sheet describes a certification process that includes optical data, simulation and independent review. Naming a test procedure is not a substitute for checking an applicable product record.

Our applied-film record guide shows what to preserve when reading the official directory. The scope of one rating program should not be stretched into unrelated protection, suitability or compliance claims.

Use the publisher for the full document

Public abstracts are useful for deciding which source to consult. They do not contain all definitions, conditions, exceptions or reporting requirements. Obtain the applicable licensed standard through its publisher when the actual procedure is needed. This site does not reproduce procedural clauses, equations or standards tables.
